BBC News - Earworms: Why songs get stuck in our heads

Ever felt a song is stuck in your head and no matter where you are and any situation the same song with be played in your head over and over again. Though it is nice but sometimes it can be annoying especially when concentrating on work. Well the reason for the song in your head is here. Earworm as it is officially know is the song stuck in your brain.

The song that is heard for the first time will be registered in one's brain and when it's heard multiple times then it will be stuck.Sometimes a song will suddenly be pooped in even if one hasn't heard the song for a long time. This is due to the current environment and feelings that trigger the involuntary memory. Another reason why a earworm poops in is stress. It is reported that if a person is stressed up, a familiar song will be played in one's mind in order to calm him or her down.

The reasons for earworms are; music is a multi-sensory stimulus, music is often encoded in a personal and emotional way (anything encoded with personal connotations is recalled as memory) and music is often used to remember instructions, informations, locations and warnings.

The best way to get ride a certain earworm is to listen to another song many times, but it might poop up again base on one's situation.
